Approach to Therapy and Psychoanalysis

My clinical work emphasizes depth psychotherapy and emotional experience and includes work with individuals and couples.  I often meet with my clients two or more times a week.

Depth work and contemporary psychoanalysis are central to my practice.  Historically, depth was related to the unconscious, going deeper than the level of an immediate problem to explore and integrate lost parts of the self.   This level of discovery can foster opening into a sustained process of inquiry and expansion.  Although anyone can benefit from this kind of work, it is particularly appropriate for people seeking growth at the level of inner life, including experiences of life meaning and deeper satisfaction with relationships.

One of my strengths is working with emotion, which may relate to sources of depression and anxiety, but usually involves more complex feelings related to relationships and repeated life experiences.  Often people realize there are patterns to some of their difficult experiences, but find it difficult to unravel these patterns alone.  I am experienced in working with trauma and providing the safe place for emotional experiencing that is pivotal in successful trauma work.  I approach emotions as important information about our needs for well-being, which can be lost in contexts that support repression rather than productive inquiry.

Those pursuing callings related to creativity, healing, and transformative leadership may also find the generativity of a depth approach particularly helpful.  I have some background in painting and creative writing and I work with professional creatives interested in facilitating their artistic process through this kind of exploration.
